Learn garba
Garba Steps for Beginners: Be Tali, Tran Tali, Dodhiyu
The easiest way to learn garba: start with be tali (two claps), then tran tali (three claps), then dodhiyu, hinch and popatiyu. Every step moves counter-clockwise around the circle, on the beat.
1. Be tali (two claps)
Count: Step-step-clap, step-step-clap (on counts 3 and 6)
Face the centre and move counter-clockwise with the circle. Take two easy steps forward, clap once, turn slightly outwards, take two steps and clap again. Keep your arms soft and let the clap land on the beat.
2. Tran tali (three claps)
Count: Step-step-clap, step-clap, step-clap
The same circle path as be tali, with a third clap. After the first clap, add a quick step and clap twice more, turning a little with each clap. It speeds up the feeling, so start slowly and find the pattern before you go faster.
3. Dodhiyu
Count: A bouncy 6-count with a side swing
A faster, bouncy step. Step to one side with a small hop, swing the other leg across, then repeat to the other side while you keep travelling around the circle. Arms swing with the body.
4. Hinch
Count: A slow sway with a dip on every third beat
A graceful, slower step. Sway forward and back with soft knees and dip slightly on every third beat, with a turn of the wrists. It rests the legs while the circle keeps moving.
5. Popatiyu
Count: Quick toe taps and claps, like a parrot's hop
A playful step named after the parrot (popat). Tap the toes quickly in front, clap, hop lightly and repeat. It's fun in groups and works best on lively, fast garba.
